CMG Director to Bike 300 Miles to Support Action Grants
Our Director & COO, Liz Smith, will be riding her bike, Siggi, 320 miles in this year's Northeast Climate Ride to raise money for our Action Grants program!
Liz will be among up to 200 cyclists who will be riding from Bar Harbor to Boston September 17-21 . The event goal is to raise awareness and at least $400,000 for more than 100 sustainability, cycling advocacy, active transportation and environmental causes nationwide, including our own programs at Conservation Media Group! This will be Liz’s first time participating as a rider in one of Climate Ride’s seven events across the country. Over the last six years, she has worked in numerous positions on the ride’s support staff, including directing medical for the ride as an EMT, and producing short films to engage people in the ride.
“I am a huge supporter of Climate Ride and truly appreciate how the organization puts climate issues into action,” says Liz. “Climate Ride is not just raising awareness; they are getting people on the ground to do something and raising money for beneficiaries that take real action. Their mission is very similar to CMG’s in that we both work to get money into the hands of people who create measurable change.”
CMG is a Climate Ride beneficiary this year and our fundraising goal is set at $20,000. Every dollar we earn from this Climate Ride will go directly to talented changemakers working to create action in sustainability. Money raised will support our Action Grants program, which provides quick-turnaround grants of $5,000 to $10,000 to engaged filmmakers and organization to produce & distribute video campaigns with a clear call to action. Our first Action Grantee is Windustry, an organization that we discovered through Climate Ride’s beneficiaries list, who will be launching a community wind video campaign in September with support from our matching grant.
“We see many of Climate Ride’s other beneficiaries as organizations who are conducting solid work in the area of sustainable energy and we’re excited to partner with them,” says Liz. “Our goal is build capacity for passionate people to more readily use video as a means to action because film is the most emotional medium, and therefore, the most effective medium for change.”
Climate Ride was the first bike-a-thon to support environmental causes and cycling advocacy, not only by raising money but also through advocating for government change and educating participants as part of the experience. It was the first adventure travel nonprofit to raise funds for environmental causes and awareness about the importance of bike safety and advocacy, thus making the connection that an increase in active transportation will reduce carbon emissions that plague the environment.
Giving the power to the people, Climate Riders can direct the funds they raise to up to five beneficiaries of their choice. To date, Climate Riders have contributed $2.28 million to causes that work to inspire change.
