#MakeShareChange in the Philippines

One of our newest Action Grant recipients, Sally Snow, is hard at work on the My Future is Your Future campaign, part of her organization's efforts to pass a new marine wildlife interaction law in the Philippines. CMG awarded Sally and LAMAVE, The Large Marine Vertebrate Research Institute Philippines, a $10,000 grant at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival to produce and distribute the My Future is Your Future video campaign. The new set of 1-minute videos aims to educate locals & tourists about respectful wildlife interaction.

The My Future is Your Future campaign will focus on passing the "Joint Administrative Order for the Guidelines on Marine Wildlife Tourism Interaction in the Philippines," a law to unify standards set for interaction with wildlife nationwide and to ensure that best practices, based on scientific data, are followed in every tourism destination. With the passing of this law, the Philippines hopes to move into a new era of “ecotourism.” Critically, the law needs support from stakeholders in order to ensure compliance, while tourists and communities need to be reached through education.

According to Sally, "Wildlife tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the Philippines, however, currently there are no national guidelines to ensure the sustainability of practices. A new law is on its way, and My Future is Your Future will pave the way to the implementation of the law, help raising public awareness, inspire people within the wildlife watching industry and set a positive example of how tourist visiting the Philippines can be a better wildlife tourist."

CMG is thrilled to be able to support this project. CMG's Founding Director David Conover explains, "LAMAVE’s approach is brilliant! The oceans of the Philippines are some of the richest on the planet, attracting visitors who long to connect with  whale sharks, rays, dugongs, and cetaceans. I’m very excited about the opportunity for CMG to work with LAMAVE, a local group that recognizes that these connections can change lives and make the oceans a healthier place, but only if the encounters are structured with respect for the marine life. A mindful tourist can make a huge difference, both abroad and at home.”

CMG's Action Grants provide up to $10,000 to organizations and individuals to catalyze a project or campaign that uses video to create measurable action in ocean conservation or sustainable energy. We have awarded multiple Action Grants in 2015 through our Catalyst Workshops Capstone continuation fund and through partnerships with additional video engagement organizations, such as the Points North Engagement Summit at the Camden International Film Festival, and the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival.
