Bury or Stop Northern Pass

Dear Governor Hassan,

We applaud your efforts to date to defend New Hampshire's natural and cultural heritage from the proposed Northern Pass transmission line. Please join us in making sure that our children and grandchildren can pass this vital heritage on to their children and grandchildren. Please ask Northeast Utilities and Hydro-Québec either to bury the entire project in New Hampshire or stop it altogether.

Everywhere we look we see proposals for new high-voltage, direct current transmission lines.  In Maine, Vermont, and New York, new north-south high-voltage direct-current lines are being proposed completely underground or underwater; even Hydro-Québec itself is advancing an underground transmission project to connect with New York. Everywhere we look we see new, innovative underground transmission technology proposals.  Everywhere except New Hampshire.

Governor Hassan, before you host the New England Governors and the Eastern Canadian Premiers here in New Hampshire this July, please make it clear that New Hampshire welcomes each of them to our magnificent state. But please also convey the message that we will insist on smart, well-planned energy projects that advance a clean energy future and we will not welcome any overhead extension cords like Northern Pass that provide little benefit to the state, at the expense of our natural and scenic resources.

Sincerely,

Why is this important?

This area is too beautiful to spoil with high wires. Once they are erected, the land is no longer so beautiful and becomes too easy to spoil with other human stuff.

I came to NH in 2007 for the serenity and beauty of the White Mountains and the best smallmouth bass fishing in the northeast. Bury the new lines or don't allow them in NH at all. Bob Maloney

I spend every spare moment in the beautiful woods of NH - it's why I moved here - also I run a B&B - my livelihood is dependent upon tourists wanting to visit our state with its unspoiled views - please don't destroy these!

We do not need to scar our beautiful landscape with transmission lines. Keep our vistas natural.

Human progress & well-being must ALWAYS be balanced with respect for & preservation of this incredible place we inhabit. In the end, it’s all part of the same thing. Is this project an actual necessity? I don’t think so.

Please preserve NH's natural beauty; do not mar it with something that could be completed another way and which many other states have done: bury the power lines.

This project would directly affect my local region. Our economy is almost exclusively dependent on tourism, and our local landscape is a vital economic resource.

If the lines were buried it would preserve the property values in the surrounding areas.

I see NO benefit for NH and we need to do everything possible to preserve our natural resources . One of the main reasons people visit NH is for it's natural beauty.

We need to preserve our environment for our people and animals. Please don't let ugly transmission lines be installed in NH.

If you can bury the lines underground, why would you not? Safe from ice storms and hurricanes, why would you not?

Many times in our lives we have the ability to have an effect on future generations in big ways. This is one of those times. Please make the right decision, not for money but for the beauty of the landscape.
  • Chris Withersabout 11 years ago Mont Vernon NH
Other than temporary jobs, this project does nothing for New Hampshire and permanently scars our landscape and potentially impacts our tourism trade.
