Bury or Stop Northern Pass

Dear Governor Hassan,

We applaud your efforts to date to defend New Hampshire's natural and cultural heritage from the proposed Northern Pass transmission line. Please join us in making sure that our children and grandchildren can pass this vital heritage on to their children and grandchildren. Please ask Northeast Utilities and Hydro-Québec either to bury the entire project in New Hampshire or stop it altogether.

Everywhere we look we see proposals for new high-voltage, direct current transmission lines.  In Maine, Vermont, and New York, new north-south high-voltage direct-current lines are being proposed completely underground or underwater; even Hydro-Québec itself is advancing an underground transmission project to connect with New York. Everywhere we look we see new, innovative underground transmission technology proposals.  Everywhere except New Hampshire.

Governor Hassan, before you host the New England Governors and the Eastern Canadian Premiers here in New Hampshire this July, please make it clear that New Hampshire welcomes each of them to our magnificent state. But please also convey the message that we will insist on smart, well-planned energy projects that advance a clean energy future and we will not welcome any overhead extension cords like Northern Pass that provide little benefit to the state, at the expense of our natural and scenic resources.

Sincerely,

Why is this important?

I personally do not think the Northern Pass should use our state as a conduit at all. The least I could possibly agree to is that the entire length should be completely buried. No one comes to NH for a nice view of power lines!!!
  • Dan Kimballabout 11 years ago Atkinson NH
Burying is a win/win solution ---it protects our NH north country and gets the power to the ultimate recipients elswhere.
  • marvin dennis wachsabout 11 years ago bedford NH
it would be a tragedy to besmirch our beautiful state with unsightly huge towers, If other neighbor states have had their lines buried, why can't we?
  • FRANK DEMERSabout 11 years ago Holderness NH
The Northern Pass project provides no long term benefit to the people of New Hampshire. Why then should we allow Hydro-Quebec and Northeast Utilities to leave an ugly scar on our beautiful landscape, when they can bury their transmission lines?
  • Kelly Cioeabout 11 years ago Portsmouth NH
Land is in short supply these days and the forests, farms, and landscape of New Hampshire is important to its identity. I love the outdoors and don't want the beautify of NH ruined.

Keep NH Beautiful. I live in NH for its natural beauty.
  • Nat Cleavittabout 11 years ago Holderness NH
Scenic vistas of NH are pretty valuable and account for an appreciable amount of tourist income, especially to the northern portion of the state.

Job creation need not be so devastating to our natural resources, our society.
  • Kathleen Crummeyabout 11 years ago Deerfield NH NH
I love NH and our beautiful landscape. I live across from a sub-station and trust me this is already effecting me and my home. Bury the lines...NH is beautiful...let's keep it that way!
  • Stephanie Parkinsonabout 11 years ago Concord NH
Because the beauty of NH's natural environment should not be sold off to big corporations. Burying the lines will provide the power everyone needs WITHOUT destroying our environment and our natural beauty - the very thing that draws people to NH.
  • Carol DeMoreabout 11 years ago Freedom NH
I believe future generations deserve the same opportunity to see the beautiful forests and mountains that I had a child. It is shortsighted to destroy our natural resources. Once gone, they are gone forever.
  • Dorothy McPhaulabout 11 years ago Sugar Hill NH
Our beautiful state is enjoyed for its pristine beauty... with no ugly towers. We must preserve it!
  • Peter Coffinabout 11 years ago Kingston NH
as a former resident of New Hampshire's White Mountain region, I can attest to the devastating effects of high voltage towers/clearings on the views that we all hoped were protected forever.
  • Anne Dustinabout 11 years ago Laconia NH
I'm not in favor of ruining the beauty of our state, with ugly transmission lines, when they could be buried underground.
  • Denise Duboisabout 11 years ago Gilford NH
New Hampshire's north country MUST be preserved. It is the crown jewel of the state.
  • Fred T. Daleyabout 11 years ago Sandown NH
In my opinion there is very little benefit to our residents to mar our beautiful countryside with huge towers delivering no power to our residents. If they come thru it must be underground or go home!
  • Frank Wilichabout 11 years ago Bethlehem NH
I see burying NP wires as a way to preserve the environment, make money for the State of NH, and to set important precedent for future projects which may threaten what is precious to all who live and visit our beautiful State.
  • Ted Fittsabout 11 years ago Whitefield NH
Governor, it is time not for equivocation but for protection of irreplaceable and fragile beauty, which is our common birthright. Embrace the precautionary principle and bury--or end--N.Pass.

We are stewards of our land, and we must pass it on to our children and grand children in natural condition, not with unsightly poles. Thank you.

Because all life is fragile and fleeting and we should safeguard the beauty of our island home for those who follow.
  • June Fichterabout 11 years ago Newbury NH
I believe NH's forests, and northern NH forests especially, are absolutely precious and should be protected for our and future generations. They should not be destroyed for a transmission line.

I moved to NH from NY just 11 months ago. I love it here, because I'm surrounded by nature. Let's not fragment that nature, as has been done in NY.
