Mediterranean Conservation Society's film Fisherwomen was part of a two film campaign geared toward building and overseeing Turkey's first community-managed Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Gokova Bay. In Turkey, the profession of fisherwomen is facing extinction due to overfishing and the lack of younger women learning the trade. Through the film, these strong and courageous women tell their stories of family hardship, of the volatile fishing economy, and of the exciting promise of recovery that sustainable fishing brings. This second film is drove an an increase in regional interest in AKD’s programs for the training of local fisherwomen. Mediterranean Conservation Society was our 2015 Blue Initiative Grantee, receiving a $40,000 grant to work on this campaign. Click here for more on their project.
