Bury or Stop Northern Pass

Dear Governor Hassan,

We applaud your efforts to date to defend New Hampshire's natural and cultural heritage from the proposed Northern Pass transmission line. Please join us in making sure that our children and grandchildren can pass this vital heritage on to their children and grandchildren. Please ask Northeast Utilities and Hydro-Québec either to bury the entire project in New Hampshire or stop it altogether.

Everywhere we look we see proposals for new high-voltage, direct current transmission lines.  In Maine, Vermont, and New York, new north-south high-voltage direct-current lines are being proposed completely underground or underwater; even Hydro-Québec itself is advancing an underground transmission project to connect with New York. Everywhere we look we see new, innovative underground transmission technology proposals.  Everywhere except New Hampshire.

Governor Hassan, before you host the New England Governors and the Eastern Canadian Premiers here in New Hampshire this July, please make it clear that New Hampshire welcomes each of them to our magnificent state. But please also convey the message that we will insist on smart, well-planned energy projects that advance a clean energy future and we will not welcome any overhead extension cords like Northern Pass that provide little benefit to the state, at the expense of our natural and scenic resources.

Sincerely,

Why is this important?

For environmental and recreational enjoyment in addition to visitation revenue from visitors to the. mountains and the north therm forests .

Here in Mansfield CT we are watching a replacement set of High tension power lines. The destruction of the landscape for modest towers is astonishing. The magnitude of the NH project will be catastrophic.

This is one of the last unspoiled areas on the east coast. We do not need towers through the wilderness!!

It's better to temporarily scar the environment by burying the transmission lines than to scar it forever with above ground transmission lines and towers.

Please protect and retain the natural beauty of our White Mountains. It would be criminal to scar the natural landscape of this New England gem. MD

It would be a tragedy for a construction project like the Northern Pass to destroy miles of forest. It brings civilization to one of the few untouched places we have left. Focus on producing more energy within the United States through sustainable means.

I spend a lot of time in the mountains of New Hampshire. While I understand the need for transmission lines, if an alternative (such as burying the lines) exists, then that makes infinitely more sense. Protect what makes New Hampshire special.

There are less invasive alternatives to this scar across the mountains.

Above ground high current power lines and generators transmit microwaves that can induce tumors and cancers. Lower the health risks for the residents in the path of these structures.

I have traveled to the white Mountain region with my children for the past 20 years. The serenity of the landscape is magical and needs to be protected and preserved at all cost.

I love hiking in the White Mountains and I bring my "tourist dollars" with me to spend there. I don't want to look at those towers as a visitor, and the people who live in the affected communities want it even less.

The beauty and the peace of these mountains, source of pleasure to so many over extended time, must be protected. Please take the action necessary to do this.

Thoughtful planning requires taking environmental consequences into account. The Northern Pass does not, not for NH, not for Canada.
