Bury or Stop Northern Pass

Dear Governor Hassan,

We applaud your efforts to date to defend New Hampshire's natural and cultural heritage from the proposed Northern Pass transmission line. Please join us in making sure that our children and grandchildren can pass this vital heritage on to their children and grandchildren. Please ask Northeast Utilities and Hydro-Québec either to bury the entire project in New Hampshire or stop it altogether.

Everywhere we look we see proposals for new high-voltage, direct current transmission lines.  In Maine, Vermont, and New York, new north-south high-voltage direct-current lines are being proposed completely underground or underwater; even Hydro-Québec itself is advancing an underground transmission project to connect with New York. Everywhere we look we see new, innovative underground transmission technology proposals.  Everywhere except New Hampshire.

Governor Hassan, before you host the New England Governors and the Eastern Canadian Premiers here in New Hampshire this July, please make it clear that New Hampshire welcomes each of them to our magnificent state. But please also convey the message that we will insist on smart, well-planned energy projects that advance a clean energy future and we will not welcome any overhead extension cords like Northern Pass that provide little benefit to the state, at the expense of our natural and scenic resources.

Sincerely,

Why is this important?

I am also a property owner in Tamworth NH, a frequent user of the White Mountains. Once we destroy the scenic qualities that make New Hampshire so special, we can never get them back. Please bury the power line like you do everywhere else.

The Whites are a treasure. Please don't spoil them (and yes, development such as this spoils them). Thank you.

I grew up in New England and spent a lot of time in NH while going to school and teaching in the Boston area. New Hampshire is a special place to me and I am opposed to seeing it defaced by this powerline.

There is precious little protected wilderness in the northeast. PLEASE do not disrupt New Hampshire!

I have been enjoying the wilds of New Hampshire's White Mountains for many years. Don't let corporate interests scar the landscape. Insist on preserving the pristine forest for the generations that follow.
  • Samantha Landryabout 11 years ago Boston MA
As a frequent visitor to the White Mountains, I think it is extremely important to maintain this beautiful environment for future generations.

If other states can do underground transmission, so can NH. Protect this beautiful and unique land.

I have a vacation home in NH and live the WMNF too much to see it ruined for future generations

The new lines need to be buried in order to avoid the visual impacts that goes along with the 80' high proposed towers. New Hampshire is a beautiful state and that beauty needs to be preserved.
  • David Bockianabout 11 years ago Nashville NH
I have been to the mountains in the area, and have seen the views from the AT and Mt. Washington. We need to preserve some areas as holy, natural ground... Please!

I have moments of hope that our long, shameful history of relegating environmental concerns to second-class staus or worse may be coming to an end. We must stop despoiling the irreplaceable treasure that is our natural heritage.

If power lines are not going to be buried, this project should not move forward.

I grew up in New Hampshire and look forward to moving back to its largely unspoiled beauty soon. The rewards of maintaining our pristine landscape will carry on for decades or even centuries. Please do the right thing! Respectfully, Larissa Powers

Please do not let our state be ruined for private gain!

I own a condo at the Owl's Nest and the towers would go right through the golf course. They would make it so ugly, not to mention what the rest of our beautiful state will look like!
  • Michele Nevinabout 11 years ago Franklin NH
I am afraid my property value will go down, and have seen the towers in Quebec!

I love the sky line in NH as is, especially in the fall. With no damn poles sticking up.
