Production of Protecting the Salish Sea is Underway
CMG is very pleased to have the opportunity to work with Jessica Plumb as one of our 2015 Action Grant recipients. We met Jessica at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival where she was a finalist in our pitch competition. We awarded her a $5,000 matching grant for the production and distribution of her project, Protecting the Salish Sea, which recently started production.
When asked why CMG was excited to fund this project, Director Liz Smith explained, "Jessica's in-depth knowledge of and respect for local issues shows in her work. Her proven track record working with local conservation organizations was irresistible. Building networks with engaged partners on the ground is absolutely key to making change with film in an effective way."
Jessica's video will be part of a larger campaign by theFriends of the San Juans (FSJ) to develop a new sensitive area designation, a “Particularly Sensitive Sea Area” (PSSA), through the International Maritime Organization, which would begin to limit the shipping of fossil fuels and mitigate potential oil spills and other disasters in the Salish Sea. The Salish Sea is an inland waterway that spans the American and Canadian waters of the Pacific Northwest. Explosive demand to export tar sands and other fossil fuels from the interior of both countries has led to an unprecedented number of proposals to vastly increase shipping of fossil fuels through these fragile inland waterways. A PSSA designation could reduce this risk.
Jessica's video will be showcased at various festivals and presentations, with a goal to secure pledges of support and public endorsements from key stakeholders, as well as educate the general public on the importance of this PSSA designation and encourage them to sign a petition in support.
According to Jessica, this video will be "vital for both education and outreach with the general population that will be affected if an oil spill were to occur. Education on what a Salish Sea PSSA is and why it is needed is important so that community members are comfortable with it and become ambassadors."
CMG's Action Grants provide up to $10,000 to organizations & individuals to catalyze a project or campaign that uses video to create measurable action in ocean conservation or sustainable energy. We have awarded multiple Action Grants in 2015 through our Catalyst Workshops Capstone continuation fund and through partnerships with additional video engagement organizations, such as the Points North Engagement Summit at the Camden International Film Festival, and the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival.
